Chikwawa needs food security, good roads, says Atupele

United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi says food security and good road networks are crucial for people to live better lives.

He said this on Sunday at Mitondo Primary School in Chikwawa where he conducted a rally after whistle-stops in the East Bank of the Shire River.

Atupele, who is son to former President Bakili Muluzi, said it was unfortunate that people of the Shire Valley face food shortages when they are blessed with rivers for irrigation.

Chikwawa and Nsanje often experience dry spells or floods, conditions that limit crop yield. Yet, the two districts boast of major rivers such as Shire, Ruo and Nkhate which can be tapped for irrigation.

Therefore, Atupele pledged to ensure that people of the two districts utilise their resources

 to grow crops under irrigation.

He said he will also ensure that fertiliser prices are affordable.

“I am also sad to see that the construction of Thabwa- Fatima-Muona Road has delayed. This is an important road as it has passed through areas where people rely on agriculture and fishing,” said Atupele.

The party’s secretary general Genarino Lemani said the country should trust Atupele as he has experience of running government because he held various ministerial positions.

Besides improving food security, he said the party’s manifesto tackles business as crucial for empowering people economically.

UDF regional governor (South) Rodrick Khumbanyiwa, who is former Chikwawa East legislator, asked people to give him another chance on  September 16.

He said: “I have delivered and no need to mention every development project. If you can trust me with another five years, I will complete some remaining projects such as building teachers’ houses, school blocks and expanding health facilities.”

“To improve food security, I will encourage people to embrace irrigation farming.”
